Hadrosaurs
Hadrosaurs are a group of duck-billed dinosaurs. These dinosaurs were herbivores and are, thus far, the only herbivorous dinosaurs known from the state. It is impossible to ascribe a species, or even genus, to the fossils due to the diagnostic features of hadrosaur species (skull and pelvis) not being present. Hadrosaurs had batteries of small slicing teeth made for cutting up plants to make them easier to digest. They could have hundreds of teeth, and they were all alligned in neat rows. Their teeth are one of the more common finds as far as dinosaurs go in the state, in fact itβs the only dinosaur fossil I have personally witnessed being found so far.
Age: Late cretaceous
Hadrosaur teeth
The hadrosaur teeth found in South Carolina come in a variety of shapes and sizes dependent on the position in the maxilla (jawbone). They generally have a primary ridge down the middle and are cupped along the edges, making identification quite easy. They are small, typically ~1cm
Hadrosaur maxilla
This is a hadrosaur maxilla, the jawbone that would have contained all its teeth in life. This one is relatively small, so it likely originated from a juvenile.
