Ischyrhiza mira
Ischyrhiza mira is, probably, the most well known and easily recognizable of all the skates and rays from the Cretaceous of South Carolina. It has large rostral spines, and very unique and recognizable oral teeth. This sawfish differed from modern sawfish in having a root that attached the tooth to the rostrum. The root is quite large and flares outwards with an easily recognizable end. The crowns have a change in color just before the tip.
Size: 1cm - 5cm+ (1/5-2+ inches)
Scale: 1cm
Age: Late Cretaceous
Rostral Spines
Ischyrhiza mira rostral spines are immediately recognizable due to their size, shape and morphology. They are typically broken either missing the tip of the crown or the root.
Oral Teeth
Ischyrhiza mira oral teeth are tiny, but are also very regonizable. They have a bilobate root, and a long protrusion from the front of the crown. This is a larger specimen at ~8mm wide.
