Tyrannosaurs
Appalachiosaurus montgomeriensis is the only species of tyrannosaur currently known to have lived in the Southeastern United States during the late Cretaceous. It would be surprising if there weren’t more, but there is currently no evidence of others. The holotype specimen for Appalachiosaurus is a juvenile that was discovered in Alabama in 1982, and an adult would have grown to nearly 25 feet long. 40% of the dinosaur was recovered, which is outstanding compared to the typical isolated dinosaur elements found on the East Coast. In South Carolina we mainly find teeth along with toe and other bones that could belong to Appalachiosaurus, but it is difficult to positively assign them to this dinosaur with confidence.
Age: Late Cretaceous
Appalachiosaurus montgomeriensis teeth are ~3cm tall from tip to bottom of the crown, with long roots that extend below the crown. Unfortunately during deposition severe damage was caused to these teeth making it difficult to obtain a pristine specimen.
